On Easter morning at approximately 7:00am Allegheny 9-1-1 received reports of a house on fire at 142 Homestead Street in the Swisshelm Park section of the City of Pittsburgh. The following units were dispatched on the initial assignment; 19 Engine, 16 Engine, 18 Engine, 17 Truck, 4012 (District Battalion Chief), 12 Engine (Go Team), 4013 (Safety Chief) and MAC 1 (Mobile Cascade Unit). Engine 19 arrived on the scene within minutes, as the address was only about half a block from the firehouse. Initial size-up was heavy smoke and fire from the 2nd floor of a two-story brick residential structure. The crew from 19 Engine advanced an attack line and quickly knocked down the bulk of the fire. Additional crews checked for extension.
The house, which is owned by Pittsburgh Firefighter Owen MacAfee (Owen was the former Fire Chief at Wilkinsburg Fire Department before they were merged with the City of Pittsburgh) sustained heavy fire damage on the upper floor, as well as smoke and water damage to the rest of the house. Owen had just purchased the house 10 days prior to the fire and was in the process of getting the house ready to move in. There were no injuries reported in the fire and Owen was off-duty when the fire broke out. Owen is assigned to 19 Engine company.
