On Friday night, March 2, 2018 Carnegie Fire Department (Station 118) was dispatched to a fire alarm activation at 423 Broadway Street in Carnegie. First arriving Police Officers reported a working fire with heavy smoke and fire evident. Officers reported entrapment and that they were having difficulty accessing upper floors due to heavy smoke. Additional fire companies were alerted. firefighters arriving on scene began making rescues with a ladder truck via upper floor windows. Initial interior attack was initiated however conditions quickly deteriorated and there was a collapse of the roof into the structure. Command immediately ordered firefighters out of the structure and initiated defensive operations. Multiple additional alarms were requested to the scene. Upwards of 5 aerial master streams were in operation in effort to darken the fast spreading fire. Crews battled the blaze for several hours before bringing the blaze under control. A maintenance man who lived in the building perished in the blaze. The large 4-story building houses a restaurant (Pa Pa J's) on the first floor and multiple apartments on the upper floors.
